Dhidhdhoo has witnessed significant development in terms of infrastructure. A large area of the village has been successfully reclaimed, opening up new possibilities for expansion and growth. With 250 flats already built and occupied, and an additional 75 flats currently under construction, the island is expanding its housing options, catering to the needs of its growing population.

Each household visited during the Kaiveni Higun welcomes the couple with blessings, refreshments, and sometimes even small gifts, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Fishing once stood at the heart of Dhidhdhoo’s economy and way of life, providing livelihood and identity for generations. However, with the rise of the tourism industry and increased access to job opportunities in nearby resorts and urban centers, the younger population has gradually shifted away from traditional fishing. This transition reflects the broader economic changes occurring across the Maldives, where service-based employment is becoming more appealing due to higher wages, modern working conditions, and career growth potential. 

Despite this shift, Dhidhdhoo continues to preserve a number of traditional occupations that contribute to the island’s cultural and economic diversity. Skilled carpenters and construction workers remain in demand, particularly as the island experiences ongoing development and housing expansion. Additionally, traditional fish preparation techniques—such as drying, smoking, and cooking—are still practiced by a few residents, particularly among older generations. These rare trades not only provide income but also serve as valuable links to the island’s heritage.

Dhidhdhoo is widely recognized for its peaceful and secure environment, making it one of the most serene islands in the northern Maldives. Crime rates are remarkably low, with rare occurrences of theft or drug-related issues.
